Article Summary:
- Saudi Arabia achieves the Approved Destination Status (ADS) by China, effective July 1st.
- The ADS is in line with Saudi Arabia and China’s economic and strategic partnership for stronger trade relations and a boosted tourism sector.
- Saudi Arabia hopes to attract five million Chinese visitors by 2030, as part of its Saudi 2030 Vision.
Saudi Arabia has been granted the Approved Destination Status (ADS) by China, effective July 1st.
The development is in line with Saudi Arabia’s involvement in the second China Roadshow and the ITB China in Shanghai.
The move is a testament to Saudi Arabia’s resolve to become an economic and strategic partner of China, as the two countries strive to boost trade relations and the tourism sector.
The Approved Destination Status is an agreement that countries enter with China to permit Chinese tourists to visit the country in a tour group.
It signifies a historic milestone in Saudi travel and tourism as the kingdom hopes to make China its third-largest source market for international arrivals by 2030.
5M Chinese visitors by 2030
Saudi Arabia aims to attract five million Chinese visitors in 2030.
In preparation for this, Saudi Arabia has increased direct flights from China since 2023, introduced tailored products, and entered strategic partnerships for enhanced flexible independent travel (FIT).
The FIT—formerly known as the Foreign Independent Tour—refers to travel that does not make use of a packaged tour but rather a customized experience by a travel professional.
Essentially, the FIT means travelers do not have to be part of a travel group or follow a set travel schedule or itinerary.
Mutual benefits for both nations
According to Saudi Minister of Tourism Ahmed Al-Khateeb, the Approved Destination Status means that Saudi Arabia is well-prepared and equipped to receive Chinese visitors.
Under the ADS, Chinese holders of a Saudi tourist visa will find it easier to explore the kingdom in groups.
“The Saudi Tourism Authority has played a crucial role in visa facilitation, reduced fees, improving air connectivity, and ensuring destination readiness with Mandarin-language information available on www.visitsaudi.cn, Mandarin signage at airports, and Mandarin-speaking tour guides and hotel staff,” remarked Al-Khateeb.
Meanwhile, Saudi Ambassador to China Abdulrahman Ahmad Al-Harbi noted the mutual benefit the Approved Destination Status provides to both countries.
“By strengthening bilateral ties with China, the ADS agreement opens doors for economic development across sectors, benefiting both nations.”
Saudi Tourism Authority CEO Fahd Hamidaddin added, “Saudi’s approval as a tourist destination for Chinese visitors reflects our continuous efforts and participation in trade shows and conferences, leading to agreements with Chinese organizations.”
“We strive to provide a seamless, enjoyable, and safe experience for Chinese tourists, including streamlined visa procedures, increased flight capacity, and Mandarin integration across airports, destinations, tourist sites, and digital platforms like the ‘Visit Saudi’ website.”
“Partnerships with trusted Chinese brands such as UnionPay, Trip.com, Huawei, and Tencent further enhance our offerings.”
