Saudi Arabia Railways (SAR) is participating in the International Trade for Transport Technology (InnoTrans), which takes place in Berlin from September 24-27.
Trains and railways play a significant role in the kingdom’s broader strategy of transforming its transportation and logistics sectors. Moreover, it helps diversify the Saudi economy and enhance public services.
SAR’s rail travel plans
Saudi Arabia has launched expansion plans to increase its network coverage from 5,500 kilometers to 8,000 kilometers. This will promote increased connectivity between Saudi regions and cities. On top of this, the kingdom has also started massive programs to develop road networks, aside from various aviation infrastructure milestones.
Moreover, these plans will champion innovation and sustainability. Since 2022, for instance, the kingdom has experienced an 84 percent growth in passenger traffic. This is a key indicator of a growing need for safe, reliable, and sustainable transportation systems. It also supports the objectives of Saudi Vision 2030, to position the kingdom as a regional logistics hub.
Next-gen trains and luxury tourist experiences
In line with these plans, SAR introduced at Innotrans 2024 its luxury train service, “Desert Dream.” The kingdom hopes to provide tourists with an opulent experience that lets them take in the grandeur of Saudi landscapes.
SAR also signed a contract with train manufacturing company Stadler to produce 20 trains. These 20 next-gen trains will cover Saudi Arabia’s East Railway network, which serves major urban centers including Riyadh, Hufuf, Abqaiq, and Dammam.
Additionally, SAR presented its landmark Landbridge project, which will link the Red Sea and Arabian Gulf coasts by 2030.
Strategic partnerships for operational efficiency
To enhance Saudi Arabia’s railway innovations, SAR also partnered with shipping companies such as Maersk and MSC. This will allow the country to improve its freight transport and logistics capabilities.
In particular, SAR and Maersk will work together to optimize container transport between Dammam and Riyadh. On the other hand, SAR and MSC will collaborate to increase container volumes along the same route.
SAR has also started test runs for hydrogen-powered trains in Riyadh. This supports Saudi Arabia’s broader 2030 goals of reducing carbon emissions and promoting clean energy solutions.
These partnerships will allow the kingdom to improve its operational efficiency and position itself as a chief player in global logistics. It will also help them implement cutting-edge rail solutions.
SAR: Offering a modernized railway sector
Apart from these presentations at InnoTrans, SAR also used the opportunity to forge partnerships with potential partners and investors. SAR aims to execute state-of-the-art solutions for rail projects, particularly in spheres such as digitalization, signaling, and telecommunications. SAR is also looking into tie-ups with international institutions to gain knowledge and train in railway development matters.
With these developments and undertakings, tourists can look forward to a more modernized railway sector, as part of a broader push to transform travel and logistics.
