Madinah’s visitor statistics

In 2023, Madinah received an impressive 14.1 million visitors. This figure represents a 124% increase compared to 2014. At the time, the city attracted 6.3 million, jumping to 7.5 million in 2017 to 9.8 million in 2019. From 2020-2021, meanwhile, the Saudi government travel restrictions in light of the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2022, visitors rose to 8.2 million.

On average, visitors stayed for 10 days, contributing over SR49 billion in spending in 2023. This influx of visitors highlights Madinah’s appeal and the effectiveness of its tourism strategies.

Several factors have contributed to this impressive growth. Government support has been crucial, with various harmonized programs enhancing the visitor experience. Improvements in accommodation, hospitality, transportation, and health services have made Madinah more accessible and welcoming. Additionally, the activation of technical procedures and the expansion of museum services have enhanced the overall visitor experience.

Attractions and programs for pilgrims

Madinah boasts several key attractions that draw millions of visitors. The Prophet’s Mosque, a significant religious site, is a major highlight for pilgrims. Quba Mosque, the first mosque built in Islamic history, attracts many visitors. Mount Uhud, another important religious site, offers historical insights and picturesque views. These attractions provide both religious and cultural experiences, enriching the visitors’ journey.

Saudi Vision 2030 includes the Guests of Rahman Program, aimed at enhancing the pilgrimage experience. This program plays a significant role in attracting visitors to Madinah. The “Visit Madinah” electronic platform offers comprehensive information, making it easier for travelers to plan their visit.

These initiatives underscore the city’s commitment to providing an exceptional experience for all visitors. In particular, the Madinah Development Authority is working with its partners to ensure the readiness of 100 locations.

Madinah transport plans

Looking ahead, Madinah has several ongoing projects to further enhance its tourism sector. Efforts are underway to develop and rehabilitate Islamic historical sites, preserving their heritage and making them more accessible.

In addition, various transportation options are being expanded to improve connectivity. Collaboration between government agencies and the private sector will continue to strengthen the tourism infrastructure. These plans align with Saudi Vision 2030, aiming to boost tourism and promote cultural heritage.

In September, the Al-Madinah Region Development Authority announced the Madinah Bus’s subscription services for pilgrims visiting the Prophet’s Mosque. The shuttle services cover stations like the Abdulaziz Ali-Aliyah and Al-Khalidiyah routes, the Al-Qasswa, and the Haramain High-Speed Railway Station.

A month before, the authority also confirmed its expansion plans for the Madinah public transport service. Under the initiative, they will build up to 500 stations to increase coverage up to 90 percent by 2030. In the same month, Saudi authorities announced a cable car system in 2025 for pilgrims visiting the Cave of Hira.

Meanwhile, earlier in June, air taxis made their flight debut in the kingdom. The milestone marked the first unmanned, licensed, autonomous air taxis to fly in the country.
