Currently, the cup includes a semi-finals and a final, typically in January. Overall, the Spanish Super Cup showcases the best of Spanish football, offering thrilling matches and memorable moments.

About the La Liga and Copa del Rey

Meanwhile, La Liga, which fans officially know as LaLiga Santander, is Spain’s top professional football division. Since its establishment in 1929, it’s been one of the world’s most popular and competitive leagues.

La Liga features 20 teams, including powerhouses like Real Madrid and FC Barcelona. Each season, teams play 38 matches, competing for the championship title. The league is famous for its high skill level and dramatic matches, making it a major attraction for football fans worldwide.

The Copa del Rey, on the other hand, is the oldest football competition in Spanish football. It’s been around since 1903. The tournament is open to teams from the top divisions of Spanish football, as well as clubs from lower divisions.

The format of the Copa del Rey involves multiple rounds, starting with preliminary matches and progressing through knockout stages. The final is usually held at a neutral venue, often the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium in Madrid or the Camp Nou in Barcelona.

Currently, Barcelona holds 14 Super Cup titles, with Real Madrid a close 12 titles. Meanwhile, Athletic Bilbao has three Super Cup titles, Deportivo La Coruña also has three, and Atlético Madrid with two titles.

Jeddah hosting the Spanish Super Cup

The Spanish Super Cup in Jeddah will take place at the King Abdullah Sports City Stadium. The tournament, which will take place in January 2025, will feature Real Madrid, FC Barcelona, Athletic Bilbao, and Real Mallorca. Specifically, the competition will run from January 8 and 12, 2025.

First, Real Madrid will compete with Real Mallorca on the event’s opening day, January 8. On he following day, Barcelona will battle it out with Athletic Bilbao. The winners of these two separate matches will face off in the final, on January 12. Football fans eagerly anticipate the intense matches and the chance to see top teams in action.

This isn’t the first time that Saudi Arabia has hosted the Spanish Super Cup. In fact, it last hosted the football competition in 2020, when Real Madrid won against Atletico Madrid.

Following this edition, Saudi Arabia hosted the event a second time, in 2022. There, Barcelona emerged victorious, defeating Real Madrid. Earlier this 2024, Real Madrid won.
