Chinese-Saudi Cultural Exchange Promoted at Riyadh Book Fair

The fair is taking place at the King Saud University from September 26 to October 5. There, attendees can enjoy more than 2,000 publishing houses from 30 countries, including China. Through the fair, the Saudi Arabia’s Literature, Publishing, and Translation Commission aims to promote cultural exchange and knowledge sharing.

Bayt El-Hekma: Bridging the literature gap

As the event showcases Chinese literature alongside modern novels, it gives readers a taste of classic and contemporary thought. The fair also supports the growing demand for Chinese language learning. For instance, prominent publisher Bayt El-Hekma played a vital role in bridging the gap between the two nations through literature.

Bayt El-Hekma, which translates to the “House of Wisdom,” is a royal library that has existed since 830 AD. It is one of the world’s most important centers of learning, specializing in subjects such as translation, philosophy, and literature.

At the book fair, Bayt El-Hekma spoke about its work translating Chinese literature into Arabic. These include classics such as Sun Tzu’s “The Art of War” and Luo Guanzhong’s “Three Kingdoms.”

Bayt El-Hekma’s editorial manager, Amr Moglith, has observed a growing interest in the Chinese language and culture in the kingdom.

“I see a demand from Saudis to learn the Chinese language,” he said. “With every year, the demand for Chinese books increases.”

Chinese language and culture’s importance

Earlier, in September 2024, 175 Chinese teachers arrived in Saudi Arabia as part of joint program. Under the initiative, these teachers will deliver classes in Saudi schools using the Chinese language.

With Chinese language skills, Saudi Arabia hopes to boost job prospects and unlock educational opportunities for young Saudis. More importantly, it will open doors for students to pursue higher education in Chinese universities.

Saudi Arabia has recognized the importance of culture in building strong international ties, and this event marks a crucial moment in strengthening the cultural diplomacy between the two nations.

Chinese and Saudi authors, translators, and artists have come together to participate in panels and interactive sessions that discuss literary trends, the importance of translation, and the future of Sino-Saudi relations through the arts.
